- During his talk, please keep track of interesting things you learn (!) and questions (Q) that you have.
- We often teach the scientific method in school as a very linear and predictable process (write a hypothesis, run an experiment, take data, analyze data). Did Gian's research process look as linear as you would expect? What surprised you about how he talks about his research?
- High school science classes sometimes offer a pretty limited view of what it takes to be a scientist (good at math, fast at solving problems, etc). Describe three "non-traditional" skills or personality traits you hadn't thought of before that would help a scientist be successful in this field.

Higgs Boson Particle: Exploring the Fabric of the Universe
Watch the Higgs Boson Particle TED Talk. In it, Gian Guidice talks about how scienctists use the CERN particle accelerator to explore the fabric of the universe. You will be responding to his talk on three different levels:

! I really liked the thought of quantum tunneling and was interested in the ultra- high dense higgs field. Also I liked the thought about the sand dunes and how they are kind of related to how the higgs boson could collapse. Gian's research was completely unconventional. There is no way he could of created a hypothesis for this, he noticed something and went off of his discovery.
ReplyDelete3) I think imagination could actually help scientists, along with being unprepared in a way. I mean going into something with no expectations and then just seeing what happens. The last trait that is non-traditional is wonder. Successful scientist need to have a sense of wonder in their field.
!That Higgs field is always in contact of us wherever we are.
ReplyDelete?What is a tunnel diode?
?Do they have proof f the ultra dense higgs field?
!Eventually the higgs field will collapse the entire universe.
2. His hypothesis and experiment when the opposite of linear. He had no idea of where he was going with it and instead of looking for one answer, he was looking for anything new. He talks about his research like it is something he wasn't expected to find and that is what brings him joy in his line of work.
3. It would help to become a scientist if you are optimistic, imaginative, and restless.
(Q) how did the scientists discover the higgs boson particle? What process led them to the discovery?
ReplyDelete(!) the entire concept that the universe is one in a multitude was quite interesting.
2) he almost seemed to be grasping at straws with his experiment. He had no idea what he was looking for, he only knew that he was looking for something new. He seemed to find amusement in his research, amused at the fact that he even had found anything useful with his pursuit.
3) A scientist had to have imagination and a inborn curiosity to find some new ideas or solve problems.
1.) ! Higgs field is everywhere, ! Higgs could collapse the whole universe ? How positive is science that this will happen?
ReplyDelete2.) Gian's research was not how I expected it to be.

What I learned from this video on the Higgs Boson particle (!) is that there is something besides the regular field called the ultra-dense field. I also learned that the field that we have now is barely perfect for our universe and anything else (like the ultra-dense field) would destroy our universe.
